Your home is your pride and joy. When you buy a new one, you want to add those personal touches that really make a place feel 'yours'. Your forever home should reflect your personality, and whether it's by changing the wallpaper or building an extension, most people make that happen.
If you had an unlimited budget, you could go further than just an extension, a garage, or a new bathroom, though. How about a whole new story? What about an extra acre of garden, or a moat around the house? Or a tennis court in the yard for the summer?
Whilst these aren't considerations for most of us, the super-rich are a little different. When they buy, they buy big. We're talking crazy prices, crazy designs and crazy features. Check out this list and see pictures of some of the most outrageous homes of the rich and famous out there!
1. Aaron Spelling/Petra Ecclestone
This beautiful property has quite the history. You're looking at the famous - and notorious - Los Angeles Manor. Covering over 56,000 square feet, and boasting tennis courts, an orchard, a bowling alley, a skating rink, a swimming pool, and three kitchens, it was once listed as the most expensive private home in the world, and it's the largest mansion anywhere in California.
The property was built by Aaron Spelling on the site of a house once owned by Bing Crosby, and when the legendary film producer passed away in 2006 it went on the market with a price tag of $150m. Candy Spelling, the producer's widow, described it as 'the greatest entertainment house of all time'. The house was always going to stay in the hands of the rich, but it turned out to stay in the hands of the famous, too. Petra Ecclestone, daughter of Formula 1 Racing millionaire Bernie Ecclestone, bought the property in 2011.
2. Bill Gates
Bill Gates was, for a very long time, the world's richest man. He's also one of the most accomplished people in the history of computer science; perhaps only Steve Jobs could even run him close in those stakes. These days he's donated an enormous amount of his wealth to charity, but he still keeps this beautiful $147.5m home in Medina, Washington.
As you can tell from the charity donations, Gates is a giving person. Within (and beneath his property) are servers, which provide internet access covering the entire Washington state. All the standard pieces of the modern mansion are here; the bowling alley and the boat outside, but it's the huge library which Gates is most proud of. Visitors to his home are given PIN devices which allow them to change the temperature, lights and music themes of the house to suit themselves. Like changing the screensaver on his Windows software!
3. Cindy Crawford
Cindy Crawford was one of the most beautiful and desired women in the world at the peak of her fame, back in the 1990s. She was also a supermodel who was constantly in demand for catwalks, magazines and music videos. When you think of her, you probably picture her on a beach somewhere, wearing next to nothing, and looking glamorous while doing it. You'd be right to; that's exactly where she is.
Crawford and her husband own this beautiful Malibu beachfront house, which came with a price tag of $60m. It's a good size at 5,200 square feet and is hidden away within three secluded acres of land but forget about the swimming pool and the tennis court, it's the view that's the real star here. The house offers panoramic and serene views of the Pacific Ocean from every room and every side.
4. Tiger Woods
You'd probably expect any mansion owned by golfing great Tiger Woods to have a few connections to the sport that made him his fortune. And you'd be right to. Tiger Woods's $60m isn't just on a golf course, it almost is a golf course. As luxurious as the building is, the course is the star, and is intended to be the centerpiece.
Woods was heavily involved in the design of the course, and deliberately keeps conditions of grass and levels of gradient in some parts of the course different to others, in order to replicate parts of famous courses all over the world. Things like that are what keep him at the top of the game! When he's not out on his own course, he has a wine cellar, a video game cinema, boathouse, gym, running track and swimming pool to keep him busy.
5. Hugh Hefner
Of course, when we say 'Hugh Hefner, you already know we're talking about the legendary Playboy Mansion, which was home to Hefner from 1974 right through to his death in 2017. It was actually sold to a businessman called Darren Metropoulos in 2016 for $100m, with an agreement being signed that Hefner could continue to live in it for as long as he wished.
Gaining entry into the mansion during the peak of Hefner's residency, and meeting the bunnies who lived in there, was an ambition of millions of men over the course of the years. If they'd succeeded, they would have found not only a swimming pool (which seems to be the one accessory that all mansions must have), but a full sized internal waterfall! Add to that an aviary and a zoo, along with all the games rooms and bedrooms, you can imagine how much fun has gone in within these walls.
6. Oprah Winfrey
We can definitely forgive Oprah Winfrey for being a little ostentatious. She grew up so poor that sometimes her parents had to send her out to school wearing a potato sack. Completely understandably, when she started earning the big bucks, she wanted to live a life of luxury as far removed from that as possible. She's doing it in style.
Winfrey's $85m California mansion actually looks to have been built and decorated in good taste, which isn't something you can always say of celebrity homes. As you might expect from someone who works in the entertainment business, there's a huge cinema indoors, and much of the land outside has been given over to a lake for her huge and exotic collection of fish. If you get a little wet when you go outside to look at them, there's no need to worry. There are ten fireplaces inside for you to dry off in front of.
7. Ryan Seacrest
Ryan Seacrest is best known for hosting 'American Idol', and he's bought himself an iconic American home to stay with the theme. His $49m mansion used to belong to Ellen DeGeneres and Portia Perez and contains the media room which the couple got married in back in 2008.
Seacrest has been hard at work improving the home since he took ownership of it, and we bet it's now worth a lot more than what he paid for it. He's expanded the home so far that the internal coverage is now 9,500 square feet. He's also bought the two properties next door, incorporated them into the design, and added a pond. Who knew he had such a skill for a design? When he's not planning his next addition to the property, Seacrest can go and chill out for a while in his meditation room, which is a feature none of the other mansions we've looked at so far have contained.
If she could turn back time, do you think she might have gone for home that wasn't right next to a busy freeway? We bet she doesn't get disturbed all that much, though. The good strategic use of some palm trees keeps Cher's $45m Malibu mansion hidden from the road, and most people drive past without a clue how close they are to one of the world's most famous singers.
The mansion is fashioned after the Italian Renaissance style, and covers 14,000 square feet, boasting an infinity pool among its many features. If the infinity pool wasn't enough water for you, you could always walk to the edge of the hill the property is built on and look out over the Pacific Ocean. We wonder whether she's ever accidentally hit a tennis ball over that wall and into the traffic?
9. Will Smith & Jada Pinkett Smith
If you ever needed evidence of how what you can get for your money varies from place to place, feast your eyes on the gigantic mansion that Will Smith & Jada Pinkett Smith own below. That enormous, sprawling 25,000 square foot mansion in Miami cost them $42m. That might be a huge price tag to you or us, but it's a fraction of what some of the other celebrities on this list paid for their homes, and so much bigger.
We're guessing Smith got a taste of the high life when his mom sent him to live with his auntie and uncle in Bel-Air, because he stayed with it. The Smiths have a tennis court, a basketball court, a lake, a full-size recording studio and an actual pasture to amuse themselves with. What do you even do with a pasture?
10. Sean Coombs/P Diddy
OK, hands up, who thought that P Diddy would actually be living in a much larger mansion than this, with a higher price than $39m attached to it? On closer inspection of the facts, though, you can completely understand why the rap superstar decided to settle down in this "European style" estate in Holmby Hills. It's right next to the Playboy Mansion. Who knows how many times he got invited to come over the fence?
The features of the mansion are pretty impressive, too. There's a 35-seat theater somewhere underneath that roof, along with a wine room, a steam room, a massage room and a beauty salon. Also, you can swim from the pool, through an underwater tunnel, into a secret grotto - if you can hold your breath for long enough to make the trip! So, we guess for Diddy, it's not all about the Benjamins after all.
11. Jerry Seinfeld
When you write, produce and star in one of the most successful mainstream TV comedy shows of all time, you should expect to have enough money to buy a pretty sweet mansion for yourself. Jerry Seinfeld did, and he spent $32 on this highly exclusive looking residence in The Hamptons, New York.
From the outside, it looks like a pretty standard mansion, as far as mansions go. It's beautiful, and its large, but there isn't much that makes it stand out. We're about to change that perception. Somewhere under those roofs is an enormous garage which is big enough to host 22 cars. We're not here to put limits on how many vehicles anyone should have, but we think if you have 22 of them, and you're not an auto dealership, it's probably time to stop. If you're wondering why the layout of the pool and the garden looks unusual, by the way, it's because the grass is actually a baseball field.
12. Christie Brinkley
Fashion, as you already know, is big business. The best designers get paid millions for their latest ranges, and they pass some of those millions on to the people who can make their clothes look great. Christie Brinkley did that job better than almost anybody else. That's why she was the definitive 'Sports Illustrated' girl and spent more than twenty give years as the face of 'CoverGirl'.
Models sometimes get accused of having bad taste, but Brinkley certainly doesn't. This beautiful, elegant $30m mansion in Long Island looks a little bit like the White House but has features and amenities that even US Presidents don't get. The 50ft long observation deck, for example, and that gorgeous beach view. The only fact about the building that confuses us is that there are eleven bedrooms, but only nine bathrooms. Who builds a luxury mansion and doesn't make every room an ensuite?
13. Simon Cowell
Simon Cowell is a man who needs no introduction. He's the one of the most successful - and rudest! - music producers and record label bosses of all time. He's also got so much money that he can afford to pay $8m for a house, and then knock everything on it down to start again. That's exactly what he did when he was building his dream home in Los Angeles.
The house is difficult to value, because clearly, it's now worth a lot more than it was when he bought the plot of land, but we'd conservatively estimate it to be worth somewhere around $29m. As you might expect, there's a fully functional media suite within the grounds, as well as a solarium for that perfect year-round tan. The one thing we can't find mention of is a recording studio. Surely there's one in there somewhere?
14. Jennifer Lopez
She may still claim to be "Jenny from the block" when she's making music, but she's hardly living like she's still a street kid. Jennifer Lopez has a luxury home that only somebody with her many years of success and income could buy. She bought the Bel-Air property from actress Sela Ward for $28m in 2016, and it's a historian's delight.
The pine floors of the mansion are over a century old and constructed with the environment in mind; the timber is reclaimed from Mississippi and Louisiana. The doors are antique, there's a well-stocked library, a vineyard that's a wine lover's dream, and an indoor theater that suits 35 people. If she has a larger gathering to watch whatever performance she's giving that night, they have the choice of moving to the much larger private amphitheater outside!
15. Tom Brady & Gisele Bundchen
One of the joys of having enough money to buy a small palace is that you can move all of your close family in with you, if you want to do so. Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen did, and so they went looking for somewhere that had the right about of space and all the luxury facilities they'd need. They found it in Brentwood, just outside Los Angeles, with a price tag of $27m.
When the couple touched down, if you'll excuse the pun, they found a 22,000 square foot mansion boasting eight bedrooms, a lagoon-shaped pool, a wine cellar and a state of the art gym for Brady to train in. The facilities must be great, considering he's still active in the NFL at 41 years old. The couple actually moved their families in before they arrived themselves, but they and their son Benjamin are now happily resident in the mansion too.
16. Ellen DeGeneres & Portia De Rossi
We've already seen where Ellen DeGeneres & Portia De Rossi used to live, because they sold their previous home to Ryan Seacrest. When they moved, they downsized a little bit. Times must have got tough for them, because they could only afford to spend $26.5m on their new property. It's a seaside estate in glamorous Montecito, California.
The couple have no shortage of private space; the property sits in 13 acres of land which is all theirs to do with as they please. The land eventually runs out where it meets the sea and provides an ocean view that we're sure was worth a large chunk of the price on its own. The mansion was built in the style of an old Italian villa, and still looks fresh and chic despite the fact that it's been standing since 1929.
17. LeBron James
From a home with a classic design to one which reflects the very latest in modern tastes. You're looking at the $23m mansion of NBA all-time great, LeBron James. He's another resident of the exclusive Brentwood region of Los Angeles. The house is so new that it probably still smells of fresh paint and carpets; building work was only completed in 2017. It's quite the creation.
An elevator can take you straight from the ground floor to the rooftop terrace, but the kitchen sounds like it might be the star of the show. It's decked out in marble with French oak floor, and all the stainless-steel appliances have gold gilt plating. We're not sure if it makes the food taste any better, but at least you'd feel like royalty while you were eating. If James gets bored of it at any point, he can just walk across the road to his other Brentwood property, which is worth $21m. That's just showing off.
18. Lady Gaga
When Lady Gaga's hiding from the paparazzi, you can find her in her $23m Malibu mansion. It sits on six acres of hillside views, covers 10,000 square feet, and sounds like a dream house to have a party in. The 'Poker Face' singer has a theater, a bowling alley, a game room and well-kept wine cellar within its walls.
If she's getting a little bored of being home alone, she can call her friends on the telephone and ask them to join her outside in her saltwater pool or go for a ride on one of the eight horses she keeps in her private stables. If none of that appeals, they could always head for the bocce ball court. We don't even know what bocce ball is. Maybe it's one of those things that you have to be rich to understand!
19. Kim Kardashian & Kanye West
Now you know where Kanye West is sitting when he sends out his latest set of tweets and sends the internet into meltdown. This Hidden Hills mansion was already a beautiful home when he and Kardashian bought it for $20m, but they've spent a lot of time and money on improvements and renovations, and it's believed to be worth something more like $60m today.
Among the new introductions the celebrity power couple have made to the property are a full-sized recording studio (of course), a movie theater, a two-story playroom for the children and a brand-new master bedroom. There are also two vineyards on the land, so don't be surprised if we see them launch their own range of wine in the years to come. It's a unique and eye-catching design and wouldn't look out of place in one of the more affluent regions of Spain.
20. Billy Joel
We're on the fence about legendary singer and songwriter Billy Joel's $35m private retreat on La Force Island, Miami Beach. It's somewhere between design classic, and terrifying haunted house. We're not sure we'd want to walk up the driveway late at night.
Although you can't tell from this picture, the property contains a pier and a boat slip. It all looks like sand around the house to us. Maybe the tide is out! It must be a great place to host parties in the summer, because as well as the extensive patio there's also an outdoor kitchen. All the fun of a barbecue with all the food quality control of cooking indoors, what's not to love? The only thing that does seem to be lacking is an outdoor stage, or a performance area. Where's Joel going to put his piano, man?
21. Taylor Swift
If you visit Watch Hill in Rhode Island and walk uphill until you reach the very highest point, you'll find the $17m mansion of Taylor Swift. The global megastar allegedly bought it in cash in 2013, making it one of her first major purchases after hitting the big time. It was an astute choice; the back of the house has an unbroken view across the water, and 700m of private shoreline. Beach parties? Swift has got them.
In the early years of her ownership there were constant stories and rumors about the 'Look What You Made Me Do' singer hosting wild parties with all of her friends, but if there was ever a noise complaint, Swift managed to shake it off. There are eight bedrooms, so there's plenty of room for her on again/off again friend Katy Perry to come and visit now they're back on good terms.
22. Chris Martin
America doesn't have the monopoly on beautiful mansions. In fact, England has been doing them for longer than anywhere else. This, for example, is the beautiful countryside home of Coldplay's Chris Martin. It was once shared with Gwyneth Paltrow during their ten-year marriage, and Martin has stayed living there after their split. It comes with good celebrity provenance, too - the couple bought it for $14m from actress Kate Winslet somewhere around 2007.
It's common for the rich and famous in England to live in residences like this, deep within woodland, as it keeps them away from the glare of paparazzi cameras and intrusive tabloid newspapers. They even sometimes group together to form mini celebrity villages. Martin, for example, can count Hugh Grant and Madonna among his neighbors. We wonder who's in charge of the neighborhood watch scheme?
23. Pharrell Williams
There have been rumors around the celebrity world for years that Pharrell Williams is actually a vampire. The NERD front man, superstar producer and constant collaborator doesn't seem to have aged in all the years he's been in the spotlight. Looking at his $10.9m home, it seems that his taste is as timeless as the man himself.
The living room is so large that is covers three floors and needs its own staircase to navigate. If you're looking for the swimming pool you'll find it on the rooftop terrace, but don't worry if it's raining. You can always entertain yourself in the home theater with its comfortable leather seats. Confusingly, the property is listed as having "six and a half bathrooms". What does half a bathroom look like, and what happened to the rest of it?
24. Ozzy Osbourne
If you're familiar with Ozzy Osbourne and his exploits over the years with heavy metal icons Black Sabbath, you could be forgiven to expect Osbourne to live in something similar to the Batcave, or a dark Satanic church. If you were a fan of his adventures with the rest of his family on his hit reality show, though, you know that they all live in a luxury mansion just like all the rest of the rich and famous do. The enormous $10m property would be a great place to set up as an airb2b; there's a private guest house with its own garage.
One of the more curious facilities at the home can be found at the bottom of the garden, where a little grotto is covered in ivy and roses. It looks like it could be used as a wedding venue. Perhaps Osbourne forgets where he is and who he's married to so often that Sharon constantly has to drag him down there to renew their vows!
25. Scott Disick
There's so much money floating around the Kardashian family that you can almost catch it just by dating one of them for a while. That seems to have been the case for Scott Disick. He may have been born into a degree of affluence, but there's no doubt that his long-term relationship with Kourtney Kardashian brought some major financial benefits to his life; not least this $8.8m Hidden Hills mansion.
The property seems to have been built with something of an emphasis on "boys toys". There are several game rooms within the walls; perhaps one for each major video games console? Food is a high priority, because there's a double island chef's kitchen in there, too. Disick probably has more time on his hands to enjoy these features now, because the couple separated in 2015.
26. Halle Berry
Halle Berry is another celebrity who's managed to get that 'Spanish villa' feel down with her choice in mansions. We feel slightly wrong giving her home a price tag of $8m, because in reality it would be worth a lot more than that if she sold it today. She bought it was back in 2004. We think you could probably put a '1' in front of that if it went back on the market today at least; the fact that a megastar has lived in it for so long brings a unique value of its own.
Like many of her contemporaries, Berry has settled down in Malibu, by the beach. The huge swelling is actually spit across two completely separated buildings, and we're not too sure what she keeps in which part. Maybe there's an underground tunnel that runs between the two? Every good James Bond girl should have an impeccable swimming pool, and she's not let us down with hers.
27. Britney Spears
Sometimes she runs, sometimes she hides... in her $7.4m Santa Monica palace. Teen pop sensation Britney Spears might be not so innocent these days, but it doesn't stop her from enjoying the benefits of her fame in her beautiful home. She's generally considered to have had something of a rough 2007, but she must have recovered from it pretty quickly. This purpose-built home was finished just three years after that, in 2010.
Spears was looking for somewhere she could raise her children in comfort and style, and they were at the forefront of her mind during the design stage. There are special children's bedroom wings on the property, along with game rooms to keep them entertained. Not content with just a pool in the garden, she also had a waterfall fitted to keep things interesting.
When you really put in that work (work, work, work, work...), you get the bank balance to go with it. That's why Rihanna was able to afford this stunningly modern $7m mansion in Hollywood. It's almost more glass than any other material, so the inside of the property is always on show, but it's set in so much private land that we doubt it ever becomes an issue for her when the good girl turns bad in her private time.
Rihanna is known for her love of parties, and legend has it that there's a full-sized nightclub underneath the property for all her after show gatherings with Hollywood's great and good. You'd have to be a rude boy to turn down an invite like that. We hope that she had a strong word with whoever left all the lights on when this picture was taken, though, that's going to show up on the power bill.
29. Jennifer Lawrence
We've already seen where J-Lo lives, now let's check out the residence of Hollywood's golden girl J-Law. Everything about the $7m mansion is classic, from the style choices to her choice of location. Once upon a time, anybody who was anybody lived in Beverley Hills. Jennifer Lawrence is keeping that tradition alive.
Privacy isn't an issue for Lawrence when she's at home; the property is protected on all sides by trees and vines, meaning she can enjoy her outdoor courtyard in peace. All of the pictures demonstrate that she has excellent taste. The only thing we'd humbly suggest to her is that it might be time to cut the grass. Despite the time-honored design style of her home, she's still managed to fit in the celebrity "must haves" like the backyard pool, and a home gym.
30. Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie
We're listing both the celebrity owners of this unique home, because we're not actually sure which one of them stayed in it after they separated. Whoever did is now the proud sole owner of a truly spectacular home, steeped in tradition and class. The grand old mansion is a renovated 1830s property and cost them $6.5m to acquire.
Separated across several different buildings, there's a regal feeling to this home that you'd normally associate with the stately homes of England, and inside you can find amazing original features like the grand spiral staircase. Everything else has been brought fully up to date for 21st century use, for example the fitting of an elevator, and a properly equipped chef's kitchen. It looks like it should have cost way more than it did! One thing we can't work out, though; what exactly is going on with the land behind the property?
"Kiss from A Rose" singer Seal really must have an eye for the unusual. We've looked at so many visually striking properties in this article so far, but none of them look anything like this. This was a 'life starts again' purchase for the star, as he looked to turn over a new page in the aftermath of his split from Heidi Klum. He shelled out $6m for it in 2012, and we think he got value for every cent of that money.
There's no way you could mistake this building for anything else anywhere near it, even in Brentwood where we know so many of the rich and famous live. It's such an unusual shape, but somewhere within those uneven walls is a full-sized cinema, a home gym, and two separate world class kitchens. Once again, though, the plans speak of having five and a half bathrooms. Is this a celebrity thing, or has he just got the other half of Pharrell Williams' bathroom?
32. Leonardo di Caprio
Whoa, Leonardo di Caprio, we love your movies, and you're one of the very finest actors of our generation, but we're really not sure about that bathroom. This $5.2m mansion once belonged to 1940s singer Dinah Shore, and based on the basic layout it probably already looked pretty quirky before di Caprio got hold of it and started doing things like putting tiger skin rugs in the bedrooms.
If we're not sure about the bathroom, we're totally sold on that pool. It's just gorgeous, and the view is to die for. We're sure that's the first thing he fell in love with when he made the decision to buy. You could get over the bathroom when you take that into account, plus there's another six (and a half!) to choose from. There's a tennis court out there somewhere too, although how you can play without getting distracted by the scenery is beyond us.
33. Harry Styles
From the moment he appeared as a teenage hopeful on the British version of the X-Factor, the life and career of Harry Styles was only heading in one direction - up. His outlay on his mansion may be quite low compared to some of the other names on this list; a mere $4m; but bear in mind he's had much less time to make his riches than most famous people. He's still a young man in his 20s. Maybe his age played into his choice of home; it looks a little more like a tree-house than a mansion!
The place to be seen when you're rich, famous and young is Los Angeles, and so that's where Styles has set up camp. In what seems to be a new trend, he's gone for a saltwater pool rather than a more traditional offering, and the whole place has a bit of a nature vibe going on.
34. Selena Gomez
Back in Hollywood Hills, this is the $3m home of Selena Gomez. If the rumors are to be believed, she deliberately bought a property in an area as far away as possible from ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber, who lives down in Calabasas, California. $3m is a lot to spend on a breakup, but if it's true, she at least got a really pretty home out of it.
The style of the mansion is classic and rambling at the same time, although the traditional build of the house is slightly at odds with the much more modern looking pool outside. We think it's supposed to be a nod to Disney and fashioned after Mickey Mouse's ears. We at least hope that's the idea, because if it's not, then you could say it looks a little bit like something we'd rather not mention in front of a family audience.
35. John Travolta.
'Pulp Fiction' and 'Grease' star John Travolta just tore up the rule book and threw it out of the window when he had this $2.7m home built in Ocala, Florida. Nothing about it looks like it goes with anything else, and the blueprint must be quite the thing to see. We're trying to guess which part of the house goes where, but there's just not any clues in looking at it from this angle.
The two things that do stand out are obvious, though. The picture's sense of scale comes from his own private plane, which he has casually parked outside the house like it's just another car. Did you spot the second one, though? It's hiding away on the other side of the image. Travolta both takes off and lands in his Boeing 707 from home, and so there's a private runway built on the land.
36. Kristen Stewart
'Twilight' star Kristen Stewart was having something of a bad time in the second half of 2012. Her affair with married film producer Rupert Sanders had just come to light, effectively ending her all-star relationship with Robert Pattison, and so she needed to do something to cheer herself up. We think spending $2.2 on this slice of paradise in Los Feliz, Los Angeles might have done the trick.
The mansion has a rustic charm, and an almost country feel to it, with a strong emphasis on privacy provided by all the trees. That's probably exactly what she was looking for at the time. The beautiful sun terrace, with its stacked stone fire, is a location that could always make the world feel fine, and nobody could be sad when they're looking at the views of the valley that this home offers.
37. Emily Vancamp
Emily Vancamp is probably best known for playing Agent 13 in the 'Captain America' movies, and the figure must have stuck in her head. She handed over the sum of $1.3m for this Hollywood Hills mansion in 2009. It combines all the luxury and privacy of a mansion with a homely feel, almost looking like the sort of home that a regular person could own - until you see the pool in the yard, of course!
High walls and a strong tree line mean she gets to enjoy all the benefits of the pool in summer without having to worry about the press getting photos of her from street level. Everything else here looks pretty standard, apart from those steel structures affixed to the rooftops in the top right-hand side of the image. What are those for? What purpose do they serve? Answers in the comments, please!
38. Miley Cyrus
What a beautiful home. We hope nobody ever takes a wrecking ball to it. You're looking at the family mansion of Miley Cyrus, which is worth something in the region of $6m. Her famous father Billy Ray used to own it, but now it's all his daughter's.
If you only know Cyrus from her 'bad girl' image, you might have been expecting pictures of a wrecked house that's hosted one too many parties, but this actually all looks really warm and inviting. The soundproofed home theater is a really nice touch, and what sort of musician wouldn't have a room with guitars on the walls? In fact, the only thing that really makes the mansion a little unusual is the giant skateboard ramp you can find outside it. The house was apparently designed in the Tuscan style, and whoever built it did a really good job of making it feel authentic.
39. Beyoncé & Jay-Z
Be honest. How many of you have just looked at this picture and immediately thought about the 'Tower of Terror' ride at Disney's Hollywood Studios? Yeah, we did, too. There's a very good reason that it looks the way it does, though. Before ultimate celebrity power couple Beyoncé and Jay-Z bought it for $2.6m, it used to be a church.
The unusual dimensions of the building allow for some fairly unique design features. The ceilings in some places are 26 feet high. That's let the new owners install a step-up dining room and a sitting room that's more like a loft. Those kinds of dimensions are also a great way to show off your impressive book collection, and so there's a floor to ceiling library in there somewhere, too. We're guessing you need quite a large ladder if you want to browse the top shelf.
40. The Hiltons
We don't actually know how much this spectacular mansion complex cost. We're really sorry about that. We can all probably get a clue of its value purely by knowing who owns it, though. This is the family home of the Hiltons. Additionally, it's also located in the Hamptons, so you can be sure it cost around double the price it would have been pretty much anywhere else in America.
If you were expecting the house to look a little more glamorous or modern, you were probably only thinking about the things that famous daughter Paris Hilton would look for if she were choosing a property. This home was actually bought by her parents, who own the global hotel chain. It's got that classy townhouse feel to it; the sort of place a world leader might stay when they were taking a private vacation. It's also got the best-tended lawns we've seen so far!
41. John Krasinski & Emily Blunt
Hollywood power couple John Krasinski and Emily Blunt's first home together may look like a traditional house from the outside but looks can be deceptive. Within those walls, the latest in environmentally friendly technology really make this property a mansion for the future!
Set in five acres of beautiful country landscape in Ojai, California, the old-fashioned looking townhouse completely runs off a solar energy system and has its own well for drinking water. That means they and their young children are almost completely self-sufficient. We bet they even grow their own food on the land. In the event of the nation's power supply suddenly collapsing, head straight over to their place to get your phone charged, they'll be unaffected! We're used to seeing celebrities campaign on behalf of environmental causes. It's refreshing to see two of them actually backing their words up with action.
42. Paul McCartney
Is there something going on with old school musicians and houses that look like they're the set of the latest horror movie? Billy Ocean's looked scary enough, but the mansion of former Beatle and music legend Paul McCartney is just straight up terrifying. The trees aren't doing much to help with the aesthetic, either!
McCartney has lived in many grand homes over the years, and this is just the latest in his collection. We should have known he'd choose a countryside hideaway for his retirement; he made his feelings about living close to the land very clear in his song "Mull of Kintyre". It could just do with a little something - maybe a splash of color - to make it look less intimidating. Yesterday, all our troubles seemed so far away. Now we've seen this picture, we're not so sure.
43. Steven Spielberg
As one of the most successful and famous directors and producers of all time, you imagine Steven Spielberg locked away in the grand study of an enormous Gothic mansion, laboring away over his next box office sensation. Instead, he's right here in this charming and picturesque estate. What's in that quirky little round extension that comes off the side of the main residence? We need to know!
We just adore the simplicity and elegance of his home. It's tucked away in Quelle Farm, East Hampton, and it's quite a recent acquisition for him, having been purchased a mere seven years ago. This is presumably where he intends to enjoy his retirement. The property came with quite a large amount of land so Spielberg, ever the generous soul, donated a full seven acres of it to a local land trust to protect it from developers.
44. Jennifer Aniston
Is this actually someone's home, or is it a gigantic shopping complex? It's absolutely enormous; just look at the way it dwarfs that enormous crane in the background. This vast Beverly Hills complex is actually the current home of Jennifer Aniston. What could she possibly need all that space for? Maybe she likes to be able to put her Friends up for the night when they visit.
Cranes and other building materials have been common sights on this plot of land ever since Aniston bought it. She's lived there for years, but constantly renovated and redeveloped it, extending and modernizing every year. It's now believed she's considering selling it and expects it to fetch a value of somewhere around $15m. If there's a very rich person out there with a family of about twenty people, this could be your ideal opportunity!
45. Matt Damon
There's a theory about developing land, and it says that if you can't build out, build up. That was definitely the philosophy of whoever built this mansion, and Matt Damon must agree with it, because he parted with $15m to secure the keys. His neighbors must have thought they were guaranteed privacy when they installed that hedge. How wrong they were.
Pacific Palisades is an iconic area within Los Angeles, and Damon's house is generally considered to be the best property in the whole area. It's easy to see why; it's a towering palace, boasting seven bedrooms and ten bathrooms. Although it looks like it has several floors, some of the rooms are just very tall. In fact, in the living room, the ceilings are understood to be thirty feet high. How does he ever change the lightbulbs? Maybe he invites his best friend Ben Affleck to come over, and stands on his shoulders?
46. Conan O'Brien
Memo to Conan O'Brien; your swimming pool has dried up. Order some more water in! That's the only fault we can find with the talk show host's sophisticated mansion though. He's another resident of Pacific Palisades, and as you can see, the competition over who really does have the best home must be pretty fierce.
O'Brien has chatted his way into becoming a multi-millionaire, and he actually paid $5m more than Matt Damon to acquire this property, with the price coming in at $20m. We're not sure there's an extra $5m of value in what we can see on the picture, but he's certainly working on pushing the value up. As if the mansion wasn't large enough, he's recently acquired the house next door and is arranging to have the combined together. By the time he's done with that, it'll surely be as big as Buckingham Palace!
47. Mila Kunis & Ashton Kutcher
A-List celebrities are able to bag A-list properties. When two of them team up, they tend to do even better. In the case of "That 70s Show" co-stars Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, they surely own one of the most beautiful beachfront homes in the world. This cozy, romantic looking dwelling is in Santa Barbara, and set the loved-up couple back to the tune of $10m.
There's a beautiful view in every direction from every room in the house. The kitchen is the perfect combination of rustic and modern, and that fireplace looks more than capable of keeping you warm in the winter. Are you ready to feel a real kick of jealousy? This isn't even Kunis & Kutcher's main residence. They actually have another $10m in Beverly Hills. This is just the place that they and their two children come to on vacation.
48. Gwen Stefani & Gavin Rossdale
Imagine building a life for yourself inside this absolutely breathtaking home, and then having to say goodbye to it. How could you? The kitchen is a work of minimalist brilliance. The view from the gym is enough to keep anybody motivated. And as for the view from that sitting room; if you ignore the curtains, it's just stunning. And yet the rock stars, from "No Doubt" and "Bush" respectively, decided to sell it as part of their divorce in 2016.
We're sure that the $35m sale price will have taken a lot of sting out of the loss for both of them, but even so, it must have been a real wrench to leave. There's even more to the property can be seen on the pictures; that tennis court has its own lighting, so you can play at night, and somewhere within the premises there's a chicken coop!
49. Chrissy Teigen & John Legend
Remember earlier on, when we took a look at Rihanna's party palace? She must have really loved the place when she first laid eyes on it, because this is the home she gave up moving there. Fortunately, she didn't struggle to find a buyer; model Chrissy Teigen and her singing partner John Legend took it off her hands for $14.1m.
You simply won't get a better view of Beverly Hills and the land is lays upon than you do from this mansion. It's modern, it's stylish, and its packed full of star quality. We can't even begin to describe how perfect that view from the bedroom is, and we love the open plan sitting room, too. We wonder if either of them has ever tried diving straight into the swimming pool from the balcony above it? You'd have to give it a try, wouldn't you?
50. Joel Osteen
For our final entry on the list, Joel Osteen is a well-known televangelist, preacher and best-selling author from Houston, Texas. With so many avenues of income, it's no wonder Joel Osteen house looks like a castle... and Joel Osteen's net worth? It's unreal. Joel is one of the richest pastors in the United States of America, and he without a doubt takes advantage of it. In the words of Osteen himself, "It's God's will for you to live in prosperity instead of poverty." And he stays true to his word. Joel Osteen house is situated in Houston in a wealthy suburb known as River Oaks.
The house cost him $10.5 million, and Joel and his wife also own a second $2.9 million mansion in Tanglewood, Houston. The River Oaks stone property boasts loads of unique and luxurious features which span across the large mansion, including 6 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, 5 open wood fireplaces, 3 elevators, a 1 bedroom guest house and outdoor pool and pool house. Joel Osteen house is 17,000 square feet and occupies a massive 1.86 acres. It is secluded by a large and beautiful ornamental fence. It is certainly more of a mega-mansion than just a house.
