Thanksgiving is a time that forces us to really think about what we're thankful for. Often we think about family, good health, or simply the food on the table in front of us, but it also makes us acutely aware of all the small things that can affect our lives in a positive way that deserve thanks.
While the true thankfulness around Thanksgiving may center around food and family, we can all understand the feeling of being thankful for the number in our bank account. It's hard enough to get by these days, so people often play the lottery in hopes to win it big, even if the odds are low.
Imagine if you were in the position where you were gearing up for Thanksgiving by cleaning your house, and just by doing that you change your life in a major way. That's exactly what happened to this couple when they made their Thanksgiving preparations. Read on to find out why they added their lottery ticket to the list of what they are thankful for.
A Louisiana Couple Cleans for Thanksgiving and Finds a Surprise
If you have ever been the host of Thanksgiving, you know it can be a blessing and a curse. It's great to have people come to your house and provide for them, but on the flip side it's incredibly difficult to get everything ready. The house must be spotless for your guests, which is where our story begins. Tina and Harold Ehrenberg are a couple from Mandeville, Louisiana who had planned to host Thanksgiving this year for their friends and family.
Of course, the Ehrenberg's needed to clean their house to prepare for their guests. That's when they found a wonderful surprise that changed the course of their Thanksgiving. Tina and Harold were cleaning their nightstand when they noticed some old lottery tickets. These were just old, worthless lottery tickets though - not all of them at least.
Usually if you find old lottery tickets, there is a hope that they will be big winners, though that hope is usually pretty small. After all, if they were winners, why would they be left and never cashed in? That's a good question, but who cares about the answer when you find out that one of them actually is a winner? For Tina and Harold Ehrenberg, one of the lottery tickets was a winner, and not just a small one. The sum of the win was $1.8 million dollars.
It is an incredible amount of money to just stumble upon, but the couple was even luckier to have found it on that day. They had originally purchased the ticket on June 6th for that day's drawing. That meant that it would expire in 180 days. With the time limit only two weeks away, they found it just in time.
A Happy Thanksgiving
It goes to show you that you should always check your old lottery tickets just in case. You may have missed one. According to Harold Ehrenberg, who spoke with the NBC affiliate WDSU, he said, "the most fun is going to be depositing that check." That certainly seems like the most fun part, other than maybe spending it. Don't expect anything lavish from Tina and Harold though. Tina told WDSU, "We don't have any plans to buy anything crazy or go on any big trips." After taxes, their earnings are at about $1,274,313, which is still a large sum of money.
It's not known whether the Ehrenbergs play the lottery often, or if they had won using their "magic" numbers, but we can be sure of one thing. This was their most memorable Thanksgiving yet..
